One that didn’t run

I covered the Wenatchee vs. Eastmont tennis match Tuesday and what I think is one of my better shots won’t run in the paper because the player lost her match.

This isn’t that uncommon with news photographs where the situation dictates how or if a photograph appears in print.

Photographers in my profession sometimes find themselves rooting for a team (internally) because of a picture they know they have nailed.

Guitar Hero

I knew nothing about this until talking to my children, ages 11, 15, and 17. Even with their explanation about what Guitar Hero was, I was surprised at how fun it actually is - and I only was watching and shooting video.

I tried to show that excitement in the video but a challenge for me was the lighting and the sound. The room had to be dim so the screen would be easy to see for the competition, and there were three games going on at the same time so the sound many times wasn’t clear.

I was able to use a shotgun mike to somewhat isolate the sound and found one game in the large room that was lit better than the others. It also helped to find a person who could explain the game.

Check out the resulting video at http://wenatcheeworld.com/section/videos

Collegians

Jenna Haven, a 2007 Eastmont graduate now at the University of Montana, finished fourth in the 400-meter dash at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Pocatello, Idaho on Feb. 29. Her time of 56.91. She was also a member of the 4×400 relay team that placed first at the meet in a time of 3:46.83, a Grizzlies’ school record.

Champions!!!

In their typical dramatic style, the Ephrata Tigers defeated Burlington-Edison 58-56 last night to win the Class 2A state championship. Winning its second barnburner in as many nights, the Tigers made the plays when it mattered last night to vanquish a tough B-E squad. Showing unflappable poise you’d expect from a team with nine seniors, Ephrata incredibly rose off the mat again. When Burlington-Edison started to crack late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers stood tall.

Prelude to a championship

It’s championship Saturday here in Tacoma, and the Tigers will have another tall order in front of them in Burlington-Edison. The fearless prediction: Ephrata gets an early lead and hangs on for dear life to win its first state title since 1993. 58-54 Tigers. See you after the game.

Collegians

Former Wenatchee swimmer Jenna Neff, currently a senior at UNLV, finished fourth in the 100 butterfly, under a minute behind teammate Maria Sandback. Neff also finished 14th in the 200 fly and 14th in the 100 backstroke in the Mountain West conference championships.

One step away

With its stunning overtime win over Mark Morris in the state semifinals last night, Ephrata has me convinced that it is state championship material. Turning back every advance the Monarchs made, the Tigers held their ground against a Mark Morris lineup that included three players over 6-foot-7. The job Brandon Evenson has done with this team is nothing short of remarkable. Marty would be proud.

Big day for Ephrata

You heard it here first. If Ephrata can somehow get past Mark Morris tonight in the 2A state semifinals, it will win its first state championship since the late Marty O’Brien got the Tigers to the promised land in 1993. The Tigers are playing their best basketball right now, and completely overwhelmed Lynden last night in the quarterfinals. Tonight we’re going to see what Ephrata’s about. We’ve seen them play in close games (last week vs. Prosser in OT), but not on the state tournament stage. See you back here tonight after the game.

Junior royalty

I went to the crowning of the Apple Blossom junior royalty at Sunnyslope Elementary School on Wednesday, video gear in hand. I was perplexed at how to shoot the event, initially thinking I would get a frame grab from the video but because there were so many people there, to be crammed into a school room, I went back to the car for the still camera, trusting from my 20+ years of experience shooting stills vs. one month shooting video, that I would come back with a usable image.

I still shot video of the scene and the moment the new queen realized she was queen, but quickly switched to my wide angle lens, still camera when the queen’s mother gave her a quick hug.

It worked well I think to have Queen Carlie Heuple reading her winning essay as the interview with scenes from the announcement running over it for the video. I think the best part of the whole video is at the end when a bicyclist rides past in the background the second she finishes her speech.

First step: check

Ephrata took its first step towards a state championship today with a 65-56 victory over W.F. West on Wednesday morning at the Tacoma Dome. Daniel Simon and Ryan Lutz each had 15 points as the Tigers took over the game in the second and third quarters.Ephrata withstood a run by W.F. West over the last few minutes, but it wasn’t enough. Defending 2A state champion Lynden awaits in the quarterfinal round after beating Foster in overtime Tuesday morning.
