Leader of the Pack

My buddy Fotsch from Milwaukee took a personal day from his job at a law firm Tuesday because he was “too distraught to work” after Brett Favre’s retirement from the Green Bay Packers. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Packer Nation. They’re not like the rest of us.

Collegians

We’re resurrecting our Collegians column in this space, where we highlight local athletes who have continued their careers at the college level. We’ll also be repackaging the Collegians column for the print edition. So here’s the first batch of local athletes who’ve gone on to bigger and better things. This list will be added to and updated throughout the spring. If any readers have a tip for us, please send them to sports@wenworld.comDillon Baird, who played first base and batted cleanup for the Wenatchee AppleSox last summer, transferred to the University of Arizona after playing the past two summers at Yavapai C.C. in Arizona. Baird, who plays third base for the No. 1-ranked Wildcats is hitting .400 with two homers and seven runs batted in through six games. Baird hit .299-3-19 in 38 games for the Sox last summer.Garrett Dorn, Baird’s teammate on the 2007 AppleSox and a Wenatchee High School graduate, was named Northwet Conference Pitcher of the Week last week. Pitching for Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., Dorn has gone 1-1 in three starts with a 3.86 ERA. Dorn threw seven nearly perfect innings in a 7-3 win over Whitman last week. He struck out eight and walked one before his bullpen cost him a shutout.Eastmont graduate Michelle Snyder is hitting .208 and playing a flawless third base for the 12-9 Florida State Seminoles. Snyder, a junior, has one homer and seven RBI for the ‘Noles.Nick Ellis, another Eastmont alum, is gotten off to a fantastic start in his college career on the Washington State golf team. Ellis leads the Cougars with two Top 10 and four Top 25 finishes this season, and shot a 3-under par 141 at the Cuthbert Cup, WSU’s first tournament of the spring season on Feb. 26. Ellis was tied for second place individually after inclement weather cut the tournament (in Kiawah Island, S.C.) short after just two rounds. Ellis’ Wildcat teammate Monika Graf competed in there tournaments this fall on the Oregon women’s golf team, finishing as high as 44th. Graf did not play in the Ducks’ first tournament of the spring season, hosted by the University of Florida.
