A visit with the King
On Thursday, I took off for “the other side of the mountains” to see B.B. King in concert. That man is touring like crazy this summer. Really, he’s all over the board. Last year, I heard that his diabetes would keep him from doing any more tours after last year’s tour, but the guy just doesn’t want to stop. And he is sure enjoying old age. At the spry age of 82, he is really taking advantage of his ability to come off as cute and endearing rather than dirty and offensive. Half of his set consisted of talking about how much he loved the ladies, and he even sang a song dedicated to his favorite doctors: Cialis, Viagra and Levitra.
Now that’s entertainment.
It was great to have the chance to see a true legend performing in person. I realized the other day that I’m slowly (but surely, it should be noted) working my way through the Louisiana Gator Boys. Last year, I made it to see Dr. John at Jazz Alley and Eric Clapton at KeyArena. Dr. John’s Jazz Alley show was fantastic. The venue’s size allowed me to be pretty up close and personal with the good doctor. Besides that, ticket prices are relatively low, compared to what you’ll pay for most concerts these days. On the contrary, I paid an inordinate amount of money to get second-row seats at the Clapton show. It was worth it, no doubt, and I’d do it again.
Other members of the Gator Boys who I have not seen in concert include Jeff Baxter, Clarence Clemons, Bo Diddley, Jon Faddis, Isaac Hayes, Charlie Musselwhite, Lou Rawls, Jimmie Vaughan, Grover Washington Jr. and Steve Winwood. There are more — 22 band members in all. (Not to mention all the other exciting cameos in the star-studded “Blues Brothers 2000,” where the Gator Boys made their first and final appearance.) Some of them I’ll never see, but I feel at least now I’ve seen the best of them.

Too bad it was such a lousy movie. Got to have the worst version of Beginning Of The End’s “Funky Nassau” ever committed to record…..
Yes, it’s true, you will never see Lou Rawls or Bo Diddley until you join them in Smooth R&B Heaven and Slappin’ Backbeat Heaven, respectively.
