The pets of my vacation, Part 1

I’m back from three weeks on the road, and I’ve seen and done so much my head is spinning!

One definite theme throughout the trip, though, was that at each friend or family member’s home we visited, there was a pet. Or two.

Now, were I a better blogger, I might have thought, “I should take photos of each of the pets we visit for a blog post!” But, alas, I’m just not that prescient. So, this series of posts will not feature photos of all the furry friends we made. I’ll leave that up to your imagination.

The first place we stayed was actually my parents’ house in Edmonds. That’s where Miss Sassypants and Mr. Shmee stayed during our vacation.

My parents are saints for agreeing to keep them, since there are already two cats residing there: my sister’s is Apollo, and my brother’s is Loki. My mom was especially nervous because the first cat I owned as a grown-up, Captain Groovy, was staying with my parents when he was hit and killed by a car. But I assured her that these cats are much more road savvy, and there was nothing to worry about.

Except, of course, how all four cats would get along.

You see, Sassy and Shmee don’t have what I would call a “close” friendship. And my sister’s cat still won’t forgive the family for bringing in Loki. So the four together would be an interesting combination. My biggest fear was that Sassy and Apollo wouldn’t get along. I figured Loki and Shmee (the two younger and more easygoing of the bunch) would end up playing together the whole time.

Man, was I wrong.

Turns out, Sassy took over the whole house and yard, adopted my dad as her personal petter, and intimidated the other three cats (who are all male and much larger than her). Apollo ignored the whole thing. Loki wasn’t feeling well, and was grumpy and standoffish the whole time. And poor Mr. Shmee — he hid in the basement for three weeks, afraid of anything that moved.

Needless to say, Shmee was mighty glad to have his home, and his family, back. Sassy seemed disappointed to leave her new “Summer Villa”. Both survived the ordeal, and are none the worse for wear.

Next in the series: Clijoh, the foot-licking cat from Portland

Sniff around with Copper

Copper is a sweet 5- to 6-year old redbone coonhound mix dog, say officials at the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society. His hound characteristics mean he will need a fenced yard to prevent wandering. He will enjoy being outdoors and going hiking and camping so he can sniff around. Copper is tolerant of other dogs and will do best in a home with female dogs. He knows how to heel and sit. He is learning other commands.

Horses: Trainer here for annual riding workshop

Harry Whitney, one of the top horse and rider trainers in the Western states, made his annual visit to the Wenatchee Valley over this past weekend. About 16 riders from around the Pacific Northwest attended the four-day workshop at the Tillicum Riders arena, adjacent to the Chelan County Expo Center (fairgrounds) in Cashmere. Some of those riders, and a bunch more, will attend a second four-day session Aug. 21-24. Here are a few photos from last week’s session:

Harry Whitney

Harry (above) uses a simple and direct approach to training both riders and horses. It’s a gentle but firm method of communication — same species and inter-species — that brings riders back year after year.

From the sidelines

Workshop participants watch from the sidelines as Mona Bammert runs Sunny through some performance exercises.

From sidelines #2

Learning by observing, clinic participants Peggy Swanberg of Tonakset, Kelly Goodrich of Brush Prairie, and Leslie Walls of Ridgefield soak up the sun and the lessons.

Hollingsworth

Kathy Hollingsworth, of Quilcene, watches and learns from the grandstands.

Stella

Stella, an Arabian-Quarterhorse mix owned by rider Susan Lagsdin of East Wenatchee (she’s there in the shadow), awaits an hour-long personal lesson with Harry Whitney in the round pen.

Cats will play with anything

Guest blog by Kevira Voegele, assistant city editor:

My husband and I recently became cat owners. His name is Moxie and he’s 5 1/2 months old.

It’s been years since I’ve owned a cat and so it’s been a huge learning experience. The biggest thing I’ve learned is cats will play with anything — absolutely ANYTHING.

As clueless new pet owners we went to a bunch of stores and bought balls with jingles in them and feathers on sticks. Those toys are just fine, but they aren’t his favorites. Nope, his favorite toys are Q-tips, empty Coke Zero boxes, a small Whiffle ball in an empty Kleenex box, drinking straws and a long string tied to a powder puff.

He bats Q-tips around while I’m getting ready for work. Only occasionally do I have to open closet doors to get them out of some place he pushed them. And the great thing is if one gets dirty or he starts to pull the cotton off, I throw it away and give him a new one. He runs and slides on the Coke boxes like they’re kitty cars. The straws serve a dual purpose: they’re great for teething and they slide quite a distance across the floor when he hits them. And except for occasionally getting his head stuck for a second or two in the Kleenex box, he likes the challenge of trying to get the Whiffle ball out.

But the powder puff — oh, the powder puff — you would think it was, well, the greatest thing to ever be sent from kitty heaven. One day I was in the bathroom and to distract him from attacking my makeup I threw a powder puff on the floor. He played with it for a good hour. And since then it’s become his toy of choice. He can carry it in his mouth and bat it around without sending it under doors as easily as the Q-tips.

One day my husband tied a piece of string to the powder puff so we could swing it and trail it along the floor in front of Moxie. Now Mox and I have a standing appointment every day in our hallway. I stand there and drag the powder puff up and down the hallway and he tries to get it.

As a result he’s taught me two things:
1) Cats can turn anything into a toy.
and 2) Playing with Moxie every day has made my life much more fun than it was before we got him.

So sweet

I was directed to this link on Twitter this morning.

It’s always sad when you hear of animals perishing in wildfires. So when there are stories of saved animals, and especially save BABY animals, it’s heartwarming.

Even more heartwarming: Save baby animals that are natural enemies becoming best friends.

It’s almost too much to handle, it’s so sweet. But it sure perked up my morning! Click on that link above to see the photos and story.

Lolcat of the Week

A little late this lovely Friday, but this week’s bit ‘o’ humor is nominated by our very own food blogger, Rochelle Feil:

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

Now, I don’t know if there’s a specific story to why this specific lolcat, but I don’t think there needs to be. It’s just funny. Geek humor, my favorite kind!

Have a wonderful, warm weekend!
