When is enough enough?
On Oct. 15, I wrote in this space about blowout etiquette. That is, how to win a high school sporting event by a large margin and not come off looking evil. The impetus for this post was a high school football game in Florida that ended with one team winning 91-0.
I think that’s just been topped. On Jan. 13, The Covenant School defeated Dallas Academy 100-0 in a prep girls basketball game in Texas.
Let’s think about this. ONE HUNDRED TO NOTHING.
Dallas Academy hasn’t won a game in the four years the school has existed, and only has 20 girls in a school that’s renowned for its work with students with a variety of learning disabilities. Eight of these girls play varsity basketball.
First things first. The opposing coach has to be fired. Today.
Something like this should never happen, not ever. The score was 59-0 at halftime and 88-0 after the third quarter. High school basketball games are played in 8-minute quarters, so scoring 100 points in 32 minutes of game play is hard enough, but 100-0? Come on.
The most disgusting thing is that the Covenant school was still playing pressure defense and shooting three-point shots in the fourth quarter, when things were obviously out of control.
Covenant’s administration is trying to apologize, and say they’ll happily forfeit the victory. Super.
I don’t know what else to say except this is a shameful event that I hope never repeats itself. High school sports should be about more than winning, more than scoring points. Is that naive and idealisic? Sure, but what’s right is right.
100-0 isn’t right.

I looked up the Covenant School online and they’re supposedly a CHRISTIAN academy?? Yeah, real Christ-like behavior there. Way to support the mission, Coach.
Sometimes High School sports really isn’t about the kids, sadly. It’s about some ego maniac coach who at the time probably felt good about putting a 100 up on the opposition, any opposition. A very classless move in this case.
I like the part about the forfeiting the game. The Covenant team probably isn’t ranked in any state type poll, and this was obviously a non-conference game. And if that is indeed the case. Forfeit? That just kind of throws more salt in the wound doesn’t it?
(Brian? Think about a blog concerning the current BCS system and these powerhouse schools who schedule the division two schools, just to pad their own national rankings. Might be a good one, food for thought anyway.)
