Weekend Funnies…..
…..and you thought this was a Joni Mitchell song?
Yes, it is “Twisted”, but it’s Annie Ross (as in Lambert, Hendricks and Ross) doing the vocal. And yes (again?), that’s Count Basie on the piano, along with his bass player and drummer from the orchestra. Taken from the 1959 TV show “Playboy Penthouse”, it must have been a heck of a gig. A couple of things to look for….a shot of a smiling (and smoking) Tony Bennett at 1:30, Annie’s cue to The Count for his break at 1:42, and Annie’s reaction when Basie takes an extra break at 1:58.
A great example of “vocalese”, that is taking an insturmental and vocalizing the part. Manhatten Transfer’s “Birdland” is another good example.
Now…it’s hot out, right? So you’re sitting in your air conditioned whatever reading this, right? Not for long. Amy Irving should turn the heat up as Jessica Rabbit channeling Patty Lee…..
Trivia? The original title of the 1936 Joe McCoy written tune was “The Weed Smoker’s Dream”. OK, I’ll buy that…..
Have a great weekend, and remember if you can’t stay cool, stay groovy……
