A Book for All Reasons

The Oxford University Press has some books I have recommended previously. This is another.  Naive soul that I used to be — and still am, to some extent — I thought writers had to have a good knowledge of English grammar and be able to spell before anyone would publish their work.  Then I learned about the usually anonymous copy editors who prepare articles and books  for publication.  I think we still need more copy editors.

“Since first appearing in 1998, Garner’s Modern American Usage (GMAU) has established itself as the indispensable guide to using the most influential language in the world. Brimming with witty, erudite essays on troublesome words and phrases, GMAU authoritatively shows how to avoid the countless pitfalls that await unwary writers and speakers whether the issues relate to grammar, punctuation, word choice, or pronunciation.

Now, completely revised, the Third Edition offers Garner’s new Language-Change Index as well as a critically-reviewed, fully-updated text.”
