Edible jewels
Pomegranate season is upon us. While we have lots of great fruit here in NCW, I still like to treat myself to a few handfulls of pomegranate seeds every so often. The seeds are so pretty and tasty.
The first time I had fresh pomegranate seeds was while hanging out with my friend, Joey. We were at his parents’ house and when it came to his attention that I’d never had the little red juicy seeds, we ran out to Top Foods, bought a pomegranate and came back to his house. There he taught me a mess-free method for removing the seeds from the fruit — remove them under water. That is to say, make sure the pomegranate is under water, that way, if a seed bursts, it doesn’t squirt all over you. Plus the seeds sink and the pith of the pomegranate floats (most of the time.)
A few days ago I was chatting with one of the checkers at Top Foods about the pomegranate I was buying and she told me they last a long time if unpeeled and refrigerated. She also told me that Costco has them, in packs of six, in stock.
I love this time of year for so many reasons. Pomegranates are on that list.

The pomegranates at Top Foods are huge and lovely! Also – pomegranate seeds are the reason we have winter. Yep. Look it up.
