On a hot summer day, many sweltering adults reach for a refreshing lager, mix up a lip-puckering Long Island iced tea or stir together a fruity cocktail. But what works best as a summer evening cool-down?

Of course, there are countless options. And these days, for me, I prefer to reach for a tub of ice cream. But if what you’re looking for is an icy, soothing beverage, your ticket is the Wesson.

For a classic Smith and Wesson, fill a Collins glass with ice. Pour in one ounce each of vodka, coffee-flavored liqueur and cream. Fill with cola. You can jazz up this basic recipe by using a flavored vodka, such as vanilla, or trying it with root beer instead of cola.

When I was 23, I took a short course in mixology through Wenatchee Valley College, and took home with me a bartending book — as well as a companion set of recipe cards — that introduced me to one of the most delectable drinks I’ve ever known, the Golden Wesson. This particular recipe doesn’t exist anywhere but that book, so you know it’s unique. A loose variation on the original Smith and Wesson, the Golden Wesson is a lot sweeter; it tastes like a butterscotch candy.

Golden Wesson (from Bartending for the Professional and Home Entertainer by Chandler L. DeLove)
1 1/2 oz. butterscotch schnapps
1/2 oz. coffee-flavored liqueur
1 oz cream
Cola to fill

Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour in butterscotch schnapps, coffee-flavored liqueur and cream. Fill with cola. Serve with a straw.

Either Wesson makes for a delicious, drinkable dessert on a warm summer night.
