This was a weekend of weeding, flowers and backyard tombstones.

Take a look at this photo as I explain.flowers-stones.JPG

When we moved to our house in Wenatchee, we found that previous owners left us a couple of surprises. That would include the daffodils you see in the photo. They used to be in a corner of the yard, but we rounded most of them up and now they hang out together in a flower bed.
Then there were the tombstones.

I first realized what they were when I was looking at replacing a fence. We had moved in during winter and it was spring — about this time of year — before I took a close look at the fence. Several of these boxy little objects were leaning up against a wobbly post. I pushed one away from the post to see just how wobbly it was and there was … let’s call him Ted. And then Mary and Walter and so on.

The tombstones, a phone call to the Wenatchee Cemetery revealed, were temporary markers. Once the permanent ones were installed, the folks at the cemetery didn’t have need for the temporaries. And they make pretty good paving stones (name down, of course) the previous owners of the home discovered. Over the years, I found more of the markers as I replaced the fence, piece by piece. Pretty much, all the tombstones are now history. But every now and then, on a weekend like this one, while weeding a rarely-visited corner of the yard …

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever found?

Ummm, isn’t it about time you raked up those leaves? I like the frog, too.
