The Matches Burn Out

After more than 8 years , The Matches have announced on their Myspace sight that the band is currently on hiatus. It is said that lead guitarist Jon Devoto has started on a solo project having already done some acoustic shows while lead vocalist Shawn Harris has joined forces with Jake Grigg of “Something With Numbers” writing songs for a yet unnamed project.
I first saw The Matches at the 2007 Warped Tour where I got a souvenir of Jon Devoto’s guitar pick (had to fight a pushy blonde for it as she stepped on my fingers). It’s the green thing I’m holding in my profile picture here on The Wenatchee World blog page. I was then able to catch them doing a headling show at Chop Suey where they put on a great show even though Shawn Harris was fighting the flu at the time.
Their first two albums, “E Von Dahl Killed The Locals” 2004, and “Decomposer” 2006 are two of the better pop/punk records I have heard but the third “A Band In Hope” 2008, left something to be desired. One wonders if the out come of the third album along with the ending of their record contract with Epitaph and having a different bassist (Dylan Rowe instead of Justin San Souci) for the last year had any determination as to the hiatus. I would think, yes.
In the future I’ll be looking for Jon and Shawn’s side projects to unfold and maybe someday all the guys will get back together for a fourth album with a tour.
The following video’s are ones I took at Chop Suey back in December of 2007.

I must say, i highly disagree with the comment on A Band In Hope. Shore, it’s not exactly along the same lines as the first two, but that’s what bands do. They evolve. Not to dispute your liking of the band, because its probably a lot like mine. But, that album is just as good as, or better than, the other two.
